Policy Brief: Data Gaps in Global Mental Health
Despite an increase in scientific production since the 2000s, important gaps in mental health data persist, particularly for children and low-income countries. Most of the available datasets were collected prior to 2010, which might not accurately reflect the recent increases in distress and growing recognition of mental health challenges worldwide. Global initiatives are crucial to reduce this knowledge gap. Good data is critical for policymakers.
Analysing the true extent of these problems is essential to guide resource allocation, advocacy, monitoring mental health trends, and ultimately improving population health. Read our brief, building on a landmark research study, that highlights critical data gaps in mental health conditions, particularly for children in low- and middle-income countries. Our recommendations underscore the vital role of global partnerships in improving data collection on healthcare, social, economic, and environmental factors, to help identify underlying causes and culturally relevant preventative measures.
