Rukhsar’s Story

We asked our members to share their journeys and experiences in mental health advocacy, exploring what inspired them to take action, the work they are currently doing, and the lessons they've learned along the way. Here is Rukhsar Rashid’s compelling story that highlights their commitment to raising awareness, supporting their communities, and transforming mental health care for those in need.

When and how did you first become interested in mental health advocacy/activism?

In my second year of university, we were studying relationship theories, and I had a revelation: it became clear why I was often in unhealthy romantic relationships and why I shared certain dynamics with my parents. This insight sparked a journey of self-discovery, encouraging me to explore my behaviours and emotions in pursuit of a healthier life. Today, I credit my contentment to my past self, who chose to prioritise mental health. I hope everyone can experience this transformative journey.

What work are you currently doing as a mental health advocate/activist?

I am currently training as an Expressive Arts Therapist. This field resonates with me due to a simple yet powerful concept: art helps express what words cannot. Although I work in corporate HR, I aspire to return to mental health. To reach more people, I’ve started an Instagram account focusing on psychoeducation and mental wellness.

What is one thing you’ve learned on your journey?

I’ve learnt that fostering a good relationship with oneself—through self-love—can help individuals navigate life and avoid significant stressors.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about you and your story?

I aim to build a community of mental health professionals to create a support network and refer those seeking help to specialists. Through arts, I aspire to foster a community that empowers individuals. Please connect with me in support of this mission on LinkedIn:Rukhsar Rashid.
