Kalundu’s Story

We asked our members to share their journeys and experiences in mental health advocacy, exploring what inspired them to take action, the work they are currently doing, and the lessons they've learned along the way. Here is Kalundu Maurice’s compelling story that highlight their commitment to raising awareness, supporting their communities, and transforming mental health care for those in need.

When and how did you first become interested in mental health advocacy/activism?

My journey into mental health advocacy began in 2018 while working as a community facilitator for the Youth Inclusion Program, a project funded by Mastercard Foundation and Heifer International. Engaging with young people in the field, I witnessed firsthand the challenges they faced with mental health. This experience laid the foundation for my passion. Later, I joined StrongMinds Uganda, where I gained deeper knowledge in mental illness treatment, advocacy, and community awareness. Working closely with youth and women, I have committed myself to creating mental health awareness, advocacy, and ongoing support.

What work are you currently doing as a mental health advocate/activist?

I am a mental health therapist and advocate, focused on providing community awareness, especially among youth and women. Through counselling sessions and Interpersonal Therapy Groups (IPT-G), I work to improve mental well-being and resilience in underserved communities.

What is one thing you’ve learned on your journey?

The IPT-G program has been instrumental in supporting individuals' recovery journeys, fostering resilience and promoting lasting mental wellness.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about you and your story?

In the past two years, I’ve dedicated myself to supporting the mental health of youth and women in our community, both in and out of school. With the help of StrongMinds Uganda, Developing Mind Ggangu C, and Makindye Ssabagabo Municipality, our awareness campaigns, advocacy efforts, and one-on-one counselling sessions have transformed lives. Community members are now equipped with vital coping skills, experiencing improved mental well-being and embracing healthier futures.
